Steinbach Atelier is a small workshop on Mill Street in San Rafael, in the same building since 1970. It began when Stefan Steinbach's father, a German-trained cabinetmaker, opened the shop; Stefan grew up at his father's bench, learned the trade the way it has been passed down in Germany for generations, and has run the shop ever since. Two generations, one building, one way of working.
The rules the father taught are the rules the shop still works by. Breadboard ends and wooden slides on every table, so the top can move with the seasons and never crack. Wood is dried properly and rested before it is cut. Drawings before sawdust. A finish you can repair, not one you replace.

We build slowly and we build to last. A shelf from this shop should outlive the wall it hangs on. A table should serve your family for generations, and then someone else's. Ours has.

Visits by appointment.
